"Munch Calligraphy"
by Steve Ausherman

Handmade card.
2014

I created this card using decorative paper,
fake Civil War-era paper currency
and an image from an entrance ticket to the Oslo Museum in Norway.
Upon the entrance ticket was placed this self portrait by the artist Edvard Munch.
My wife and I visited Norway a year
and a half ago and I kept this lovely ticket.

"Biloxi Bikini Girl"
by Steve Ausherman

Handmade Card
2014

This image was created by a map I kept from the times that I went
down to the Mississippi Coast to do
post-Katrina work. The image of the girl is a Minoan painting pulled
from an old art magazine. The blue patterned paper reminded me of foaming waves.

"Language Map"
by Steve Ausherman
Handmade card.
2014

This is another collage using atlas pages, Norman Rockwell calendars and ink. I like the image that Rockwell painted of himself here. I like that image of a person looking out of a window...the eternal stance of poets, painters, writers, thinkers and artists!

"Cali Dreaming Adobe"
by Steve Ausherman
Sketchbook Drawing.
2014

As I drank my morning coffee, our cat Cali was sleeping on the kitchen table nearby. I drew this sketch of her over a collaged page pulled out of a magazine. The page has a Robert Daughter's painting of the Rancho de Taos church upon it. This sketch includes many of my favorite things....my cat, an image from northern New Mexico and a beautiful painting within it.

"Mom's Kitchen #1"
by Steve Ausherman
sketchbook drawing 2013

I drew this sketch while home over the holidays five months ago. This is the view of my Mom's kitchen and dining room that I took in every time I had a meal as a kid, as this was drawn from "my place" at the table. The hanging phone on the wall and the hum of the fridge. The hutch and the cabinets. Brown wood and white/green linoleum. The large set of kitchen windows is off frame and to my left, illuminating the entire room. Memories of pleasure and pain. Memories of growing up. Memories of food and conversation. Memories of holiday meals. Smell of crock pot cooking down meat. The smells and sounds of home.

"Two Boys and Madrid, Spain street lamp"
by Steve Ausherman
sketchbook collage
2014

I photographed this lamp in February of 2014 in an active and vibrant street in Madrid, Spain. Smell of cooking food, sounds of street performers and sunlight that refuses to leave the night sky.

"Cottonwood Trunk"
by Steve Ausherman
sketchbook drawing
2014

This is a quick sketch that I did of a Cottonwood tree in the Bear Canyon area of the Sandia foothills. Our friends Jenn, Chuck and Jack took Denise and I camping at the Academy cabin that rests at the back of the Elena Gallegos trailhead area. A wonderful night of rustling leaves, stars over the city and campfire coals. S'mores and fleece jackets. Lizards and cactus.

"Intersection Juan Tabo & Haines Ave"
by Steve Ausherman
sketchbook drawing
2014

I had a wonderful morning off from work. Denise and I biked to Starbucks  and relaxed on the patio. I sketched the nearby intersection. I've never tried to draw the suburban sprawl of strip malls and businesses that comprise so much of my city of Albuquerque before. A first attempt. I'll try again.
